American Red Cross - Northwest Louisiana Chapter
Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Every year in the US alone, an estimated 350,000 victims die from sudden cardiac arrest. These deaths often occur because lifesaving defibrillation does not reach the victims in time. The American Red Cross is leading the movement to bring Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to the public.

AEDs are lifesaving devices that are light and easy to use and understand, even by nonmedical personnel. In cases where an unconscious victim is not breathing and has no pulse, an AED analyzes the heart's rhythm and if warranted, delivers an electrical shock to the heart (defibrillation) to restore an effective rhythm.

Employers need to consider having an AED on-site. Studies show that for each minute lost, the chances of survival decrease by 10%. Even in perfect circumstances, can EMS reach a cardiac arrest victim in your facility as quickly as needed? Right here in Shreveport/Bossier City, several lives have
been saved just in the last two years by a quick response from employees at businesses that had AEDs on hand.

The American Red Cross has a new, innovative program that includes training in the use of AEDs. Many safety professionals expect that AEDs will become as common in corporate America as fire extinguishers.

In addition to the new training program offered, the American Red Cross is one of the first in our area to offer this amazing device for sale to both companies and the general public. We encourage you to learn more about this groundbreaking technology, and the training that could save the life of someone in your workplace -- perhaps even your own life.
